Overview

Data Category Explainability gives you a detailed breakdown of how a specific type of data moves through a given entity in your inventory. When you open the Findings view for an entity and select the Data Flows tab, Relyance shows you all flows associated with that entity — including both flows where the entity is a destination (inbound) and flows where the entity is the source (outbound).

How to Access

  1. In the left navigation, go to Data Classification.
  2. Select an entity (e.g., a vendor or service).
  3. Click the Findings tab.
  4. Select the Data Flows tab to see all data flows for this entity.

What You'll See

The Data Flows tab lists all flows associated with the entity, with the following columns:

  • Flow — the source and destination of each flow (e.g., Amazon KMS → CustomerEngagement)
  • Data Element — the data category detected in the flow
  • Data Subject — the type of individual whose data is involved
  • Location — where the data was found

The tab header shows a total count (e.g., Data Flows 20) reflecting all flows — inbound and outbound combined. You can filter by status: All, Reviewed, Needs Review, False Positive, or Unreviewed.

Classification Explanation Panel

Clicking any row in the Data Flows list opens a side panel with detailed explainability for that specific flow:

  • Classification Explanation — shows the data element (e.g., Email Address) detected in the flow, with a summary of where and how many matches were found in your codebase.
  • Detection Details — the detection method used (e.g., Exact) and the rule name that triggered the classification (e.g., Code Variable: Email (Source Code)).
  • Flow Explanation — the current review status of the flow (e.g., Reviewed, Needs Review).

Why It Matters

Seeing both inbound and outbound flows in one place helps you:

  • Verify downstream sharing — understand where sensitive data categories are being sent, not just where they arrive.
  • Catch uncategorized sources — entities that act only as flow sources (with no at-rest data) are now fully surfaced, where previously they could return no results.
